5 Primary Methods to Keep away from Calling for Emergency Plumbing

Posted in DIY Plumbing on 9th October 2018

frustrated-customerEmergency!

It’s not a word people usually want to hear. Emergency rarely means something wonderful has happened out of the blue. When you encounter a plumbing emergency, it’s because you have a clogged drain, busted pipe, total loss of freshwater from the taps, or other problem that needs fixing immediately.

Fortunately, for emergency plumbing repair in Orlando, FL and elsewhere in Central Florida, you can rely on our plumbers to come to your rescue—24 hours a day.

But we know you would rather not have to deal with emergencies of any kind, and we’re happy to help with 5 tips for avoiding these problems. Some you can handle on your own, others are services you can entrust to us.

ONE: Don’t pour F.O.G. down the sink

What’s F.O.G. stand for? It’s fats, oils, and grease, and this is the Terrible Trio when it comes to drainpipes. F.O.G. is one of the main causes of sink clogs. These cooking oils look harmless when their hot because they’re in liquid form. But have you seen what they look like when they cool? They become a sticky, waxy substance. Imagine that residue clinging to the interior of your drainpipes, slowly building up until clogs are inevitable, and no amount of plunging will fix it. Pour F.O.G. out into another receptacle and put it in the trash.

TWO: Arrange for regular drain cleaning

This ties into the trouble with F.O.G.—because some will go down your drains no matter what. Plus, there’s soap scum and other debris that enter the drains. The best way to avoid drainpipe trouble is to schedule preventive drain cleaning with professionals once a year. We’ll scour out the drains and make them as good as new. You’ll rarely have clogs of any kind.

THREE: Don’t flush wipes

Pre-moistened wet wipes are more common now than ever, but they aren’t flushable—no matter what the label may say. These wipes tend to stick together and can congeal into a solid emulsion, which means a difficult clog to remove.

FOUR: Be nice to the disposal

This is an important piece of advice to remember as the holidays approach, since you’ll probably manage a great deal more cooking and cleaning in the kitchen. The disposal can’t handle anything tossed into it, however. It’s not for actual garbage, despite the name garbage disposal. Don’t put any organic items down it that are too hard for human teeth to chew (fruit pits, meat bones, unpopped popcorn kernels) or stringy foods like asparagus and onion skins. Pasta and rice are also troublesome because they absorb water.

FIVE: Install a water softener

Hard water deposits can be disastrous for plumbing and plumbing appliances, especially the water heater. If you suspect you have hard water, arrange for water testing with us. If your home’s water does have a high level of hard water minerals, we’ll arrange for the installation of a water softener that will extend the life of your plumbing.

pink ribbonDid you know that 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes? Breast cancer is currently the second leading cause of death among women, and each year over 220,000 women in the country will be diagnosed with it. Breast cancer affects men as well, with an estimated 2,150 diagnoses each year. This is why it is so important to contribute to funding for breast cancer research and resources for both women and men to diagnose the disease early and effectively treat it. Already, research funding has helped to contribute to a decline in death rates thanks to continually improving options for treatment and better screening.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Modern Plumbing – 4Plumbers, Inc. is proud once again to join in the fight against this widespread form of cancer. For this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, MPI will be donating a percentage of our October revenue to UF Health Cancer Center – Orlando Health. These donations will go to help women in need meet the expenses of their breast cancer care. To help further increase awareness among our customers, all of our MPI technicians will be wearing pink booties on their service calls.

What to Do When There’s No Water From Your Faucets

Posted in DIY Plumbing on 25th September 2018

hand-turning-faucetHandling major plumbing problems is a big part of our job as licensed professional plumbers. Often people won’t even think about calling a plumbing pro until they’re faced with a big emergency like flooding. (This is unfortunate, since trying to take on plumbing repairs DIY is a quick route to a bigger problem!) And few plumbing issues are more likely to cause people to panic than finding no water coming from the taps.

Loss of water to a house can happen for several reasons. Some need plumbers to fix, others don’t. We’ll go through what you can do when you find your house has suddenly run dry. If you need plumbing repair in Winter Springs, FL or elsewhere in Central Florida, we’re the pros to call to get the job done!

Check the other taps in your house

A single tap failing to work may be scary, but it doesn’t mean the water has shut down throughout the house. Before doing anything else, go to other taps and turn them on to see if they’re working. If only one tap is dry in the house, you may have a problem like silt in the aerator. Check the stopcock for the individual faucet and make sure it isn’t closed.

Ask your neighbors if they’re having problems

If you haven’t visited your next-door neighbors recently, now is a great time to be friendly! Find out if they’re experiencing the same loss of water. If they are, then you’re almost certainly dealing with a municipal water supply trouble. Call the water department to see what’s wrong and how long they expect the water stoppage to continue.

See if the water main is open

We recommend all homeowners know the location of the water main shut-off valve in case of flooding in the house. Usually it’s located next to the water meter. If you don’t have any water in your home, see if the main is open or if it’s become stuck. The main may have shut if you have an emergency shut-off valve, which can trigger accidentally. Look at the control panel for the shutoff valve and find out if it’s activated. Make certain you don’t have a leak somewhere in the house before opening the valve again.

Call for professional plumbers

There’s another possibility for a home losing water, which is frozen pipes. But—come on, this is Florida. Frozen pipes are not the problem! Anyway, at this point, you’ll want to have a skilled, licensed plumber check out the issue with your fresh water supply. You may have a busted or clogged water line, and this is something you’ll want fixed as soon as possible. (A reminder: the water main from the point where it crosses under your property line is your responsibility, not the city’s.)

Our plumbers are experienced with handling repairs and replacements for water mains. They use the best tools and methods to ensure the job is done right the first time. We believe the satisfaction of our clients comes first—even at the expense of profit. We aim to create a seamless process, no matter the job we do for you.
