If you have a leaking seal under your toilet, is it better to replace the toilet?
or to just get the seal fixed by a plumber. I’m not attempting this myself.

If your toilet is old you may want to replace it (but you probably need a plumber for that) and a fixture can cost around $ 400 (with labour). Changing a leaking seal costs around $ 100 at the most. If you have a burly knowledgeable neighbour, wax seals aren’t much more than $ 1.50 – $ 5

There’s no reason to replace a perfectly functional toilet unless you don’t like the way it looks. If you’re going to hire a plumber to replace the wax ring then you might want to have them replace the tank workings as well. It should only take them a bit more time and it will probably save you hassle and a trip fee later on.

That being said its actually really easy to DIY a wax ring if you want to save money. The only really difficult part is just the weight of the toilet.

Ask around to friends and family if they know how to replace seal , the seal only cost a couple of dollars or so . Letting the floor get wet will lead to a rotted floor and more trouble then needed .
